Testing Angel King threads (flat silk and metallic)

If you’re addicted to embroidery and threads, you’ll understand me!

ANGEL KING

I’ve got silk threads (11), metallic threads ( 8), and color cards (one for silk threads and two cards for metallic ones)

Test of flat silk threads:

I’m happy with the result: the thread lays down softly, gives a pleasant sheen, and its thickness allows me to embroider both foreground objects and the background.

As for whether it’s easy to work with this kind of silk… Show me a flat silk that is easy to work with :) You always have to watch that the thread doesn’t catch on anything. But that’s just part of an embroiderer’s job, so I don’t consider it a problem ^^

In the photo below, I placed two other flat silk threads for comparison.

Oval (Au Ver A Soie) is thicker, and I use it only for the foreground.

Pipers Silk is pretty fine. It’s perfect for background objects and miniature embroidery.

Angel King sits right between them.

I'm thrilled with how many light shades it has!

So, how much does it cost to get threads from Japan to the USA in 2026?

What I ordered:

1. Pure silk sample book - $79.00

2. AL Color Sample Book - $8.00

3. Lame Ace Sample Book - $8.00

4. Silk threads (11) - $33

5. Metallic threads (8) - $19

Total: $147.00

Shipping: $35.00

Customs duty: $19

I paid an additional UPS brokerage fee for customs processing on top of the regular shipping cost - $26

I wasn't very happy to part with that $26, but rules are rules ><

Summing up, I paid $227

It may sound like quite a lot, but keep in mind that I spent $79 on the Silk Color Card because I use a huge variety of different threads for my artworks and tutorials, that’s why I collect a lot of color cards. A silk spool costs $3, which is an excellent price for high‑quality silk, and next time I’ll only pay for the threads ^__^
